HIV/ AIDS AWARENESS/PREVENTION PROGRAM
Background of the Project
Bangladesh Railway (BR) has received financing (credit) from Asian Development Bank (ADB), European Investment Bank (EIB) and Government of Bangladesh (GoB) towards the cost of implementing Akhaura – Laksam Double Line Project (ALDLP) of Bangladesh Railway. The contract contains several parts and chapters including the design, implementation and supervision. The project also contains HIV/AIDS Prevention and Awareness Program for the construction workers, other employees of the contractor & sub-contractors together with the local people of potential communities residing adjacent to the construction sites of the project. The Contractor of the Railway Infrastructure development project is Joint Venture of China Railway Group Ltd., China; Toma Construction & Co. Ltd., Bangladesh and Max Infrastructure Ltd., Bangladesh (CTM-JV) are the front-line donor of the HIV/AIDS Prevention Program under the Akhaura – Laksam Railway Project.

Synopsis of Orientation Session
n December 2018, total number of HIV/AIDS Orientation & Awareness Raising Sessions among the workers of ALDLP and the community people residing adjacent to the construction sites were 04 (four). The List of Orientation Sessions with location, date & time are shown below:

Introduction: Orientation & Awareness Raising Session on HIV/AIDS & STI was conducted for the workers working in the construction site at Gumti Bridge (Bridge No: 243) on 10 December 2018 at 12.00 Noon and for the workers in the construction site at Shashidal Railway Station Yard on 10 December 2018 at 11.00 am.
There were also two community sessions for the community people residing adjacent to the construction sites at Gumti Bridge (Bridge No: 243 and adjacent to the construction sites at Shashidal Railway Station Yard on 10 and 11 December 2018 respectively.
The sessions were organized by UDOY. Dr. M. Mustafa Kamal, HIV/AIDS Specialist, UDOY and Mr. Naser Mazumder, Coordinator, HIV/AIDS Prevention Program, UDOY worked as resource persons. Mr. Mazharul Islam Khan, Program Officer and Ms. Bilkis Akhter Simo & Umme Saleha Nipa both Organizers of UDOY took active part in organizing the sessions with strong support from CTM JV. Most important point which may be mentioned here is the number of participants in the community sessions. The number of female participants in the sessions for Community people near Gumti Bridge (Bridge No: 243 on 10 December 2018 and near Shashidal Railway Station Yard on 11 December 2018 was 100%.
In the sessions on 10 December 2018, Dr. M. Mustafa Kamal, HIV/AIDS Specialist, UDOY and in the sessions on 11 December 2018, Mr. Naser Mazumder, Coordinator, HIV/AIDS Prevention Program, UDOY provided all necessary information about HIV/ AIDS & STI to the participants attending the sessions to raise their awareness about HIV/ AIDS & STI. The information included, definition of HIV and AIDS, transmission of HIV and protection from HIV/AIDS, information of STI, knowledge regarding health safety. He categorically described on HIV/AIDS and STI highlighting the following areas:
- Global, Regional and Bangladesh HIV/AIDS situation.
- What is AIDS and what is HIV.
- Sexual transmission, Transmission through blood and transmission from mother to child.
- How we can protect ourselves from HIV infection.
- Different sexually transmitted infections and their protection.
- Use of condom in protection of HIV transmission.
All the sessions were followed by question and answer sessions. Many workers/ Community people attending the sessions asked different questions. Dr. M. Mustafa Kamal, HIV/AIDS Specialist, UDOY and Mr. Naser Maunder, Coordinator, HIV/AIDS Prevention Program replied their questions.
After question and answer session, leaflets with messages on prevention HIV/AIDS and STI were distributed among the workers and community people by Ms. Bilkis Akhter Simo and Umme Saleha Nipa, both organizers of UDOY.
There was also discussion on condom promotion and condom access by Mr. Naser Maunder, Coordinator, HIV/AIDS Prevention Program, UDOY. Some condoms were also distributed among the workers willing to collect those by Mr. Mazharul Islam Khan, Program Officer, HIV/AIDS Prevention Program, UDOY.
All sessions were followed by organizing Health Camp. In each session Medical Assistant, UDOY attended workers and community people attending the sessions and provided medical consultation for them free of cost.
